hello and welcome to my very first screen cast. i'm tim graham at photo restorations by tim g., and i want to show you today how to install the gramps genealogy software on your debian-based linux computer. okay, here's the website for gramps, the software: gramps-project.org, okay? this is free, open-source software soif you're on a tight budget, you don't have to make a

large financial investment to getstarted on your genealogy, but there is a "contribute" page here, if you would like to support the teamdeveloping this software okay. this software was developed forlinux, and then, later on, windows and mac versions were introduced, but it's still easiest to install on linux, if you have it. the whole philosophy of linux is you can download software for free and give it a good try.

so i'm going to minimize my web browser, here, and i'm going to open up a terminal. now, if you have a debian-based distribution such as ubuntu ormint, these distributions come with software centers, where you can justlaunch the software center, type in "gramps". you'll see that it is available for you to install, and there's an install button right there for you to click, and after you click that installbutton,

the software basically installs itself, but if you don't have or can't find that software centerthere's a simple command in the terminal that'll do the same thing, and that is apt-get, okay, and so i'm going to type in the command, here, to type in the command here, "sudo apt-get install gramps", and it is easy as that, folks. just go ahead and press "enter". it willask for your password, so go ahead and provide that. okay, and it's getting ready to install.

it asks a confirmation. it has a few extrathings to install. these are your dependencies, okay? go ahead and accept thosedependencies by pressing "y" and "enter". now this is gonna take a few minutesto install, and in that time, i'm going to explain toyou the pros and cons of installing from the repository, okay? when you get software from the repository, the good news is it's so easy to install. you just type this line, or you find it in your software center, and the program installs itself.

that's easy. another benefit is that it has been vetted by the communities that are maintaining these linux distributions, so you know you're getting a good stable version of the software by going through either your software center or using this command, but the bad news is the version that you're going to get is not always going to be the latest version.

so i'm going to return to my browser here just to show you a few things. here is the ubuntu app directory. the gramps software that will end up on your computer if you gothrough the ubuntu software center is version 3.4.0, okay? same thing if you're on debian stable. that's going to send you version 3.4.0 aswell. if you're on debian testing, as i am, its going to send version 4.1.1,

which is the previous version, okay?gramps has just come out last week with version 4.1.2, so if you want that, you're going to have to do somethinga little special. you're going to have to download that from the website. if you're on arch linux, by any chance, these folks are have the curve, okay? they have already installed ... they've already added version 4.1.2 to their repository for easy installation, so kudos to them.

they beat me to this by a couple days, but i am catching up, okay? so, i'm going to return now to my ... terminal, here, and you'll see this has already been installed, and itis installed version 4.1.1. okay? now it had given me an error on thispackage. that's okay because i had alreadyinstalled this package previously, and this is an optional package anyway,so don't worry too much about that.

what you should do after installing thissoftware is check out, in your applications menu, under the "office" section, is usually where this turns up. here we are, the office section. you're likely to find gramps there. if you're in ubuntu, and you go intothe shell, you can just type in "gramps", and that'll come up press the windows button first, andthen just type "gramps".

it comes up pretty quickly, okay, but if you're using an applications menu, it usually shows up in the office section. so i'm going to go ahead and click on that to launch the program, and here it is. oh, by the way, the software often takes a while to load, okay? even on a good day, just be patientwith it. no need to go back into the menu andselect again, okay? just be patient with it.

it will come up eventually. it just takes a little while, so ... there it is. okay, so when you first open the software this is what you're going to see: a place for you to create a brand newfamily tree. so i'm going to click on new, okay, and then i'm going to type "the graham family tree," because i'm tim graham, and i will put my family tree here. after you have created your familytree, go ahead and load it. it's empty. you will have to fill it in,but this is how you get started, okay?

i'm going to maximize this, take up the full screen. okay, so the first thing you're going to want to do is add some people, like, perhaps, yourself. okay, if we go to "charts", you'll seethis chart is empty because nobody's here yet. if we go to people, you can add your firstperson by clicking the plus sign at the top. so i'm just going to put in my ownname. i'll save for another day therest these things, but i want to write my own name here, and click "ok" on that.

okay, if it's not sure whether the name you've given is male or female, it'll ask for your confirmation. so there we have it. all right, one person is in this tree. that's me, and if you go to "charts" ... excuse me. select yourself first, then go to charts.there you go. now you exist, okay? you're in your tree. okay, so that's how you install the software. one thing i want to make sure you're aware of.

after you install this program, it's a goodidea to go ahead and install the add-ons, okay? so this is not intuitive. you may not have thought to do this, but under "edit", and "preferences", there is options for installing add-ons,and you're going to want to do these because some of these are pretty cool. so go on and look for "new and updated add-ons"

and "check now", and this is going to show you add-ons, other ways to expand theusefulness of this software, and one you're reallygoing to want to take a close look at is the "graph view". i find this to be very much useful, okay? so you can just "select all," really. justinstall all the stuff. it's all very good, and i eagerly awaitwhen this is incorporated into the main program, so you don't havethe add it on later. but do add your add-ons.

go ahead and install them. it takes alittle bit, and you will have to restart yourprogram to see the new views. okay. "you will need to restart gramps tosee views." all right, so we'll do that. close. close, and i'll just re-start gramps, okay? so i'm going to go through my applications menu again. "gramps". there we go.

you may get an error or two saying that certaindependencies and missing. okay? some of these add-ons requirecertain dependencies. this looks okay. i didn't get any errors there, but if you get some errors, take note ofwhat they are. you should be able to install thosedependencies from the repository, but here we go. i'm going to load this tree, and this is fully installed. all the add-ons are installed.

this is ready to go. you're ready to startadding new people to this right now. okay, so there you have it. now, since i got this from the repository, we'll take a look and see the version, okay? under "about" is version 4.1.1. if you are on ubuntu, this maybe version 3.4, okay? if you want the latest version ofgramps, you'll have to get that from the website, and i'm not going to show you, quickly, the website where to download that, so i'm going to close this,

return to the website, and here it is, gramps. they have download button at the top. okay, and this takes you to the downloads page. of course, if you're on windows or mac, links are here for you. as of now, version 4.1.2 is available onlyin the 32-bit, okay? 64-bit is still the old version. so i would recommend trying the newversion, the 4.1.2 version.

if that doesn't work on your computer, then i guess you're stuck with the old version, the 3.4.8 version. but for us here in the linux world, we will use this latest version, 4.1.2. "advanced users only," okay? and here is the command that you would use, okay, but you have to download thesoftware first. so here's the link for downloading. download the .deb file. okay,

and the one i'm going to install is here,python3-gramps, and this is going to work for me, okay? once you get to this page, it says "yourdownload will start shortly," okay? it'll count down till your downloadbegins. if there's any ads here saying, "download this. download that," don't pay heed to that. just go ahead and wait for your todownload to begin automatically. here we are. now i want to put this in a easy place to find it. that'll be my desktop. okay, and this is the .deb installation file here, so i will save that.

it doesn't take too long. okay, i'm going to minimize my browser, and i'm going to right-click on this package, here. you'll see that most linux distributionswill have an easy install option if you right-click on a .deb package. in ubuntu or mint, it may be like agdebi, or something like that, "install with gdebi." here, what ihave, this is going to say "package install".

it can do this automatically, so youhave an option. if you want to use the command that they give you on the website, okay, the command is here ... on the downloads page. right, so here's the command. you could type that command in, but it's easier to just go ahead andright-click, and then choose the package installation from the menu.so this is "package install".

if you have a linux distributionthat says "gdebi", go ahead with that. "do you want to install this file?" okay, now if i didn't already install the other other one, i would go ahead and install this, but i'll save that for another time. that's about it. once you have your gramps installed, you are ready to do some genealogy, my friend, and thank you very much for joining me this evening, and happy hunting!
